Music Domain Synthesis is a whole new method used in developing digital music instruments. Unlike the sampling and modeling method, it can create digital music instruments out of “nothing" (not rely on an actual instrument in real world). Music Domain Synthesis can remove the limitation on sampling and modeling, which makes it easier to build a new digital instrument.
Sampling is like a static photo of a music instrument, so it is less likely to alter the sound. If you need to alter its sound, you will need to build a new physical instrument, and then sample its sound. You need to do most work in physical domain, and then convert to the sound which is in music domain.
Modeling is solely depended on the mathematical model of a musical instrument, so it has higher chances of altering the sound. But the range is limited by the instrument model. Also, you need to be highly knowledgeable in mathematics and you need to do most work in mathematics domain, and then convert it to the sound, which is in music domain.
Doing work in domains other than music domain has many limitations, for example, if you want to make it louder as 6dB boost in sound. But in real world, the instrument is limited to its material and cannot sound louder. The physical model of the instrument may also indicate it is impossible for that is out of its model range.
Let’s say you need a violin sound to extend to lower octave, as low as cello, strings manufacturer will tell you no such instruments exist. Also, engineers will tell you no current instrument models can achieve this. But you know the sound exists in music domain; there should be one, the only issue is that people do not know how to get it. This is what Music Domain Synthesis is good at. This method solely works in music domain without any limitations from other domains; it can achieve the new realm of sound.
